Recently, NOW TV Finance Channel conducted a feature report on the Po Leung Kuk Siu Hon Sum Primary School in Hong Kong. This innovative school, constructed using prefabricated modular construction (MiC) technology, has attracted widespread attention for its efficiency, low carbon footprint, and aesthetic appeal. The school was initiated by the Hong Kong Architectural Services Department, built by Leighton Contractors, and features a fair-faced concrete frame MiC structure meticulously crafted by AluHouse.
The school will officially commence operation in 2025 and is the first 'exposed concrete frame MiC structure project' in Hong Kong, representing an innovative exploration in the construction of modern educational facilities.

Po Leung Kuk Siu Hon-sum Primary School has a building area of approximately 4,716㎡, composed of 164 concrete MiC modules, each weighing up to 36 tonnes, fully achieving a harmonious integration of classrooms, corridors, toilets, rest areas, and balconies.
This four-storey school building, meticulously constructed by AluHouse, is equipped with 24 spacious and well-lit classrooms, each accommodating 30 seats, with a total capacity of 700 students, actively meeting the surrounding community's demand for quality educational resources.

The Po Leung Kuk Siu Hon Sum Primary School project, meticulously constructed by AluHouse, was awarded the Excellence Award at the 2024 Architectural Services Department Annual Awards thanks to its highlights such as the use of exposed concrete frame MiC technology and green construction methods.
This award is presented by the Hong Kong Architectural Services Department to recognise its outstanding public building projects and the exceptional project teams involved, including project consultants and contractors, among other industry partners, to maintain the highest professional standards in Hong Kong's construction industry, continue innovation, and lead the sector's ongoing development.

Po Leung Kuk Siu Hon-sen Primary School uses fair-faced concrete as the main building material, and the simple and pure appearance of the walls is striking. Fair-faced concrete is renowned for its natural and unadorned aesthetic, enhancing both the beauty and functionality of the building while also reducing construction costs and environmental impact. The selection of high-quality materials demonstrates the school's commitment to green and sustainable principles and subtly conveys values of respect for nature and returning to authenticity to the students.

Even more commendable is that AluHouse, building on the selection of fair-faced concrete, has for the first time integrated a horizontal pattern technique, achieving a perfect combination of standardized production and precise data control. Each MiC module is formed through integrated casting with environmentally friendly aluminium moulds, and the horizontal pattern technique imparts a unique textural aesthetic to the building surface, further enriching the overall visual layering and aesthetic of the architecture, presenting a style that is both modern and naturally graceful, while showcasing AluHouse's utmost pursuit and tireless exploration of architectural detail.

As a permanent building, Po Leung Kuk Hiu Hon Sum Primary School actively utilises MiC construction technology. All classrooms, corridors, toilets, pantries, and MIMEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and building services) modules are highly integrated and prefabricated in the factory. The modules are transported to the Hong Kong construction site by water and assembled into a comprehensive and fully functional building system, with the on-site installation process taking only 21 days.

Po Leung Kuk Siu Hon-sun Primary School is not only distinctive in appearance, but its interior space design is also filled with creativity and practicality. Relying on the building's structural framework, AluHouose adopts a reinforced concrete frame structure combining beams and columns, further facilitating flexible spatial arrangement within the building.
This design features excellent load-bearing capacity and seismic performance, allowing for the personalised customization of various façades and finishes within the building, while the interior spaces are more open and flexible. The diverse classroom styles correspond with teaching themes, making the space itself the best teaching tool, bringing unlimited potential to the future of education in Hong Kong.

A high-quality educational environment not only stimulates students' intrinsic potential but also guides them to achieve self-awareness and growth through independent exploration. For instance, the folding door design in classroom modules exemplifies a perfect combination of human-centred care and teaching efficiency.
When the main doors are open, the two classrooms can instantly merge into one, creating a spacious multifunctional classroom where different classes can hold group activities, providing more possibilities for modern education; when closed, they effectively block external noise, creating a comfortable sense of boundaries for students and reducing interference from the external environment on their learning.
