Recently, the Kowloon Tong Lianfu Road Special School project, undertaken by AluHouse (hereinafter referred to as "Kowloon Tong School"), has made significant progress, with the first batch of concrete MiC modules successfully dispatched. These modules will be efficiently assembled upon arrival at the construction site in Hong Kong, ensuring that the school is completed on schedule in 2025, injecting new momentum into the special education sector in Hong Kong.

 

 

It is reported that the Kowloon Tong School, as Hong Kong's first special education building constructed using concrete MiC modular structures, is under the ownership of the Architectural Services Department, operated by Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, with Lianli Construction serving as the project's main contractor, attracting significant attention from various sectors of society. The project is located on Lianfu Road, Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong, with a total floor area of approximately 3,572㎡, comprising a five-storey building which incorporates 238 modules, and is expected to provide an additional 480 places for students with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities.

 

 

The project aims to create a more suitable learning and growth environment for children with special needs through innovative design concepts and advanced technological means, helping them better integrate into society and enjoy an equal, respectful, and fulfilling life, while promoting the equitable distribution of educational resources in Hong Kong and advancing the positive integration of special education facilities with green building technologies.

 

 

During the construction of the Kowloon Tong school project, AluHouse deeply integrated and utilised Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology to achieve a fully digital transformation across the entire engineering process from preliminary design to construction management. BIM technology not only optimises structural design and effectively mitigates collision risks on site, but also guides the precise assembly of concrete MiC modules and the optimised layout of MEP systems through accurate three-dimensional simulation.

 

At the same time, AluHouse ensures that the assembly error of each MiC module is strictly controlled within ±6 millimetres, so that classrooms precisely formed by the combination of four modules achieve optimal space utilisation, effectively enhancing the practicality and aesthetic value of school buildings, while also creating a spacious, bright, comfortable, and pleasant learning environment for children with special needs.

 

 

In addition, the concept of industrialised intelligent manufacturing is fully demonstrated in project construction. Luyoujia actively adopts MiMEP (Mechanical and Electrical Equipment Synthesis Method), pre-integrating mechanical and electrical components in the factory and cleverly embedding them into the MiC modules.

This initiative allows over 95% of building components, including walls, MEP pipelines, and interior finishing materials, to be prefabricated in the factory and then efficiently transported to the site for installation, which can reduce the overall project installation time by 50%.

This efficient "design-prefabrication-transport-assembly" workflow, compared with traditional construction methods, can significantly reduce noise and dust pollution on construction sites, perfectly aligning with Hong Kong's long-term sustainable development goals.

 

 

Moulds are the foundation of MiC module production, and their precision and efficiency indirectly determine the quality and cost of the products, highlighting their significance. AluHouse, by introducing self-developed, recyclable customised steel structure moulds, produces concrete MiC modules that exhibit high precision and high standards, significantly shortening the production cycle while enhancing the overall structural stability and safety.

Each concrete MiC module weighs up to 27 tonnes, breaking the traditional limits of concrete module size and weight, with structural strength and seismic performance fully meeting Hong Kong school design standards, laying a solid foundation for the stability and safety of the project.

 

 

It is worth noting that the active utilisation of eco-friendly moulds can facilitate the perfect integration of standardised production and flexible assembly of MiC modules. Standardised production ensures the consistency and high quality of construction MiC modules, achieving an efficient and stable production process.

The flexible combination demonstrates the strong adaptability and versatility of the concrete MiC modules. Different MiC modules can be flexibly paired according to requirements, meeting the diverse and individualised design needs of Kowloon Tong school buildings, and providing a referenceable and replicable technical pathway for the industrialised production and design of other large educational buildings.

 

 

AluHouse has demonstrated exceptional creativity in the interior planning of the Kowloon Tong school project, cleverly integrating and applying the two core elements of "safety and functionality." The entire building is equipped with humanised designs such as rounded furniture, non-slip flooring, and accessible pathways. Dormitories, medical rooms, and laundry areas all use hypoallergenic materials and are integrated with an intelligent monitoring system, collectively creating a safe and welcoming learning and living environment specially tailored for children with special needs.

In addition, Kowloon Tong School has proactively planned to reserve community interaction spaces, which will be used in the future for regularly hosting open days and other events, building a bridge between the public and children with special needs, encouraging interaction between the public and these children, gradually eliminating social prejudice, and jointly fostering a more inclusive and harmonious school environment.

 

 

The proactive construction of the Kowloon Tong School project is not only a breakthrough in AluHouse's modular composite building technology but also a reflection of Hong Kong society's care for children with special needs. Through the proactive development of modern facilities, more children with special needs in Hong Kong can have access to equal educational opportunities.

 

This kind of open and inclusive educational environment helps children with special needs integrate better into society, enjoy equal and high-quality educational resources, and gradually realise their own value. At the same time, the successful launch and construction of the project also mark a crucial step for Hong Kong in combining special education facilities with green building technologies.
